What services are available at the clinic?

At the Munster Metabolic Clinic the Multi-disciplinary care team aims to develop a personalized care package that is adaptable and client focused.

The Munster Metabolic Clinic provides the following consultant lead service:

  • Metabolic assessment including cardiac risk, glucose homeostasis, cholesterol profile
  • Weight management programme
  • Individualized diet and lifestyle programmes tailored around existing metabolic conditions
  • Medical management of metabolic conditions by consultant and nurse
  • Referral for Bariatric surgery including gastric bypass

 

Consultant Endocrinologist

Dr James Ryan is a consultant Endocrinologist and Physician who will lead the Munster Metabolic Clinic Multi-disciplinary Team. His special area of interest is insulin resistance and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. He will give an overall assessment of each patient’s metabolic status and oversee treatment regimens. Individual patients will have a treatment pathway assigned to them with specific biochemical and metabolic targets to be met. Follow-up with Dr. Ryan will be to ensure that the treatment pathway is appropriate for each patient.

 

Diabetes Nurse Specialist

  • Individualized assessment of each client with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes.
  • Information provided on the management of Type 1and Type 2 Diabetes based on current evidence.
  • Individualized blood glucose targets agreed.
  • Advice on the best way to monitor your diabetes.
  •  Opportunity for the client to hold personal records of HbA1c levels, blood pressure and lipid profile.
  •  Education re weight management medications prescribed.

 

Dietitian

  • Body composition analysis including weight, BMI and body fat analysis from DXA scan
  • Weight management care pathyway
  • Nutritional counselling on behaviour and life style change
  • Pharmacological weight management programme
  • Interventional weight management with bariatric surgery
  • Diabetes care pathway in conjunction with diabetes nurse specialist
  • Carbohydrate awareness
  • Carbohydrate counting and insulin awareness to empower self- insulin dose adjustment
  • Individualized and group structured education

 

What happens at the first visit?

At your first visit you will have a full assessment which involves

  • A full medical history is taken and you may have bloods/ urine samples checked. If you have been asked to complete a food diary and/or blood sugar levels it is necessary to bring there with you
  • Measurements such as weight, height, Body Mass Index, waist circumference will be taken
  • A DXA scan will be performed to analyse body fat and guide treatment
  • The dietitian will offer a full diet and lifestyle assessment if appropriate
  • Personalised target weight goals agreed
  • Assess your willingness and motivation to change behavior
  • Agree a suitable treatment plan and number of follow up sessions required

 

What happens at subsequent visits?

During your follow up visits you may meet other members of the MDT as required

Your progress will be monitored closely to ensure that your personal targets are met. This will involve monitoring weight, blood sugar levels if necessary, medication adjustment and repeat DXA scanning.
