What services are available at the clinic?

At the Munster Metabolic Clinic the Multi-disciplinary care team aims to develop a personalized care package that is adaptable and client focused.

The Munster Metabolic Clinic provides the following consultant lead service:

  • Weight management programme
  • Individualized diet and lifestyle programmes tailored around existing metabolic conditions
  • Medical management of metabolic conditions by consultant and nurse
  • Referral for Bariatric treatment including gastric bypass surgery and Endobarrier- a new weight loss treatment


Consultant Endocrinologist:

Dr James Ryan received his Primary Medical Degree from University College Dublin in 1999. His early training was in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin. He received his Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 2003 and was appointed to the Higher Medical Training Scheme in Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus in 2004. He worked in Beaumont, Cork University, Limerick Regional, Waterford Regional and Galway University Hospitals in his years as Registrar and Specialist Registrar in Endocrinology and Diabetes and in General Medicine. He completed a Masters in Sports Medicine in University College Cork in 2007. On completion of his specialist training, he accepted a post as an Honorary Clinical and Research Fellow in Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and also in Cambridge University. He was appointed as Consultant Endocrinologist and Physician at the Bon Secours Hospital, Tralee in January 2012. His areas of research and special interest include genetic forms of diabetes and insulin resistance. He maintains an interest in sports medicine and is currently Doctor to the Limerick Senior Hurling Team.

Diabetes Nurse Specialist

  • Individualized assessment of each client with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes.
  • Information provided on the management of Type 1and Type 2 Diabetes based on current evidence
  • Individualized blood glucose targets agreed.
  • Advice on the best way to monitor your diabetes.
  • Opportunity for the client to hold personal records of HbA1c levels, blood pressure and lipid profile.


  • Body composition analysis including weight, BMI and body fat analysis
  • Weight management care pathway
    • Nutritional counselling on behaviour and life style change
    • Pharmacological weight management programme
    • Interventional weight management with Endobarrier
    • Endobarrier- a new weight loss treatment
  • Diabetes care pathway in conjunction with diabetes nurse specialist
    • Carbohydrate awareness
    • Carbohydrate counting and insulin awareness to empower self- insulin dose adjustment
    • Individualized and group structured education

Bariatric Services

Colm O’Boyle qualified at Trinity College Dublin in 1990. He completed his higher surgical training in Yorkshire, UK. He worked as Senior Surgical Registrar at Leeds General Infirmary and Hull Royal Infirmary. In 2000 he was the International Travelling Fellow and Senior Surgical Registrar at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia. He was appointed as Consultant General Surgeon and Lead Clinician for Upper Gastrointestinal surgery at Hull Royal Infirmary in 2002. He was appointed as Consultant in General, Laparoscopic and Bariatric surgery to the Bon Secours Hospital, Cork in January 2008. He is a member of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgical Society (BOMSS) and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO).

Mr O’Boyle has been performing laparoscopic surgery for patients with obesity since 1998. He is one of the most experienced bariatric surgeons in the UK and Ireland. He has performed over 500 procedures without surgical mortality.
